Lancia Ypsilon, our impressions

Here we are face to face with the renewed Lancia Ypsilon, A fourth-generation upset the traditions of Turin for the first time compact five-door. The body shape is undoubtedly more convenient for those who must carry in the car, in town, the offspring or friends and this feature should increase the pool of potential customers of small boats.

This new approach of the Ypsilon has naturally influenced the design. Yes, the rear doors are “invisible” due to the handles embedded in the post, but the Centro Stile directed by Marco Tencone had to raise the line of the car body and in particular the roof, sloping trend which could not affect the space in height those sitting behind. The result is a style that reminds us a little egg, a bit ’rounded and very high, especially in side view. To streamline and improve the male must use the right combination of color, or rather two-tone, because you can differentiate the color of the belt line from the roof. In this way you can create very original combinations.

We went first on the Ypsilon 1.3 Multijet 95 bhp Stop & Start Platinum equipped at all points. This is the top version in price to well € 17,300 for a production to say the least wealthy and well finished. The feeling of “luxury” is high due to the soft leather upholstery (standard) for dashboard, door panels and seats. The designers have worked hard on the perception of Turin “soft” elements of the car with which they most often in contact, including steering wheel that is solid and still be correct as a handle. And then there are the glossy black finish, which dominate the central control panel and wrap the buttons of windows on the doors. We are less convinced, however, a few pairs of plastic such as that chosen for the cupolotto of the bridge, which is stiff and rather thin or trim of the lower areas of the central tunnel.

In front is good, both at the wheel traveling as a passenger. To feel comfortable enough little adjustment because the high driving position improves visibility during operation in the city. Too bad the steering wheel is adjustable only in height and not in depth. The impression of space is enhanced by the panoramic roof, but beware: if you choose this option, available with a premium of 900 euro, is penalized in the space height of any rear passengers “over 1.75″. No problem in the absence of the roof, even the Ypsilon offers roominess among the best in its class that provides convenient travel four people. The fifth is possible but a bit ‘sacrifice, which is in accordance with the city car category. A small but practical technical choice that has impressed us is that the rear windows are open to all, or down completely in the door “hidden”. Also interesting is the positioning of the TomTom device, placed on the front left upright to be near the eye of the driver and does not interfere with visibility. This is good in all directions, even behind, and benefits from driving position. Who is better to leave dozens of small objects on the dashboard will change their habits instead on the new Lancia Ypsilon, since the bridge has no storage (in addition to the classic cassette) and the only rooms are made in the doors and center console.

The short test of the 95 hp 1.3 Multijet diesel version has confirmed the validity of this engine already used on many models of the Fiat group. And efficiency of the engines as all of the Ypsilon Start & Stop, 4-cylinder diesel shows a good level of soundproofing and promises to consume on average 3.8 l/100 km (99 g / km CO2). The parsimony and driving enjoyment of the Multijet is paid at time of purchase but that requires an outlay of € 2,300 more than the 69 bhp 1.2 Fire station. We drove a few miles with the Ypsilon 0.9 TwinAir 85 hpThe first twin Lancia history. The lively and engaging sound, played back on Fiat 500 Twin, Is accompanied by a lively and dynamic leadership that will appeal to younger audiences for sure. But be careful: if you pull and play with the gear, is much more difficult to maintain consumption of the diesel version. Speaking of changes, the new Lancia Ypsilon all have 5-speed manual characterized by a good maneuverability. The DFN will soon be available as an option only for the engine Twin.
